What is it?

In a nutshell, a satellite internet connection provides a means of accessing the internet via a satellite, overcoming, or eliminating, the current OTE requirement to have a physical telephone landline connection to access the internet.

Such systems also offer the opportunity to utilise internet based email and telephony systems such as Skype or VOIP Buster which both allow cheap international phone calls and free computer to computer calls for registered users.

Higher grade packages also allow for multiple computers/users to access the internet simultaneously and could utilise a wireless network configuration.

Systems

There are several systems available, with the professional Star Blazer system being popular with it's coverage of the Eastern Mediterranean including Crete. This is a tried and tested product which is very stable and would be suitable for home or business users.

Tooway (two-way) broadband is now available in Crete and offers a very competitive euro pricing structure and is a good deal cheaper compared to the Star Blazer or similar systems. Subscription fees average 70€ monthly, payable quarterly.
